Why Transfer Your Visa Stamp as Soon as You Get a New Passport?

When you receive a new passport from your embassy, the visa stamp and permission to stay in your old passport are not transferred to the new one automatically. You cannot travel in or out of Thailand or carry out important legal transactions if your latest visa information does not appear in your current passport.

Stamp Visa Transfer FAQ

FAQ: Top Questions About Transferring a Visa Stamp to a New Passport

It is the official process of copying and transferring your visa, entry stamp and permitted-stay expiry date from an old passport that has expired or been damaged into your new passport, endorsed so that it matches the Immigration Bureau’s computer system.

This is not recommended and is high-risk. Airport immigration checkpoints and in-country transactions, such as opening a bank account or renewing a driving licence, will not accept separate passports where the visa is not in your current passport. You must complete the transfer of the visa stamp to your new passport first.

Although the law does not specify a fine based on a set number of days, immigration requires you to do it “immediately”, before your next legal obligation, such as your 90-Day Reporting date or your annual visa extension due date.

Exactly the same. Immigration officers transfer your “Permitted to stay until” date to match the permission you were originally granted in your old passport, with no days added or removed.

There is no government fee for a standard transfer of visa stamp at the Immigration Bureau.

Some embassies (such as the UK and USA embassies) no longer issue passport-by-passport cover letters. Thai immigration is aware of this and allows a self-declaration form together with evidence of the passport replacement to be used instead. ETHAIVISA will prepare this special form for you.

Yes, this is essential. Once the visa transfer at immigration is complete, you must take your new passport to the Department of Employment to update your passport details, so that the information in your Work Permit matches as well.

You must submit an update request through the Department of Employment’s online system (or the Science Park/BOI system, as applicable) so the registrar can change the passport number in the E-Work Permit database to your current passport.

You must apply at the immigration office in the area where your main visa was most recently approved. For example, if your work visa or retirement visa was extended at Immigration Division 1, Chaeng Watthana, the transfer must be done at Chaeng Watthana only.

In many immigration areas and for certain visa types (such as Non-B or Non-O retirement), you can give ETHAIVISA a power of attorney to handle the entire process on your behalf, without having to queue in person.

Mostly the marriage/family visa (Non-O Thai Spouse) or foundation visas, where immigration officers in some areas may be very strict and ask to see you in person to confirm your residence status. We recommend checking the local rules with us before applying.

If you really must travel, you need to carry “both passports” and inform the immigration officer at the airport departure checkpoint, so the officer can record and transfer the details on the spot. This can take a long time and there is a risk of missing your flight if your documents are not in order.

Yes. Immigration officers will endorse and transfer any unexpired Re-entry Permit to your new passport at the same time, so you can continue to use it to travel in and out of the country straight away.

Yes. Embassies normally only punch the personal data page and barcode of the old passport and leave the Thai visa pages intact. If the hole goes through the visa stamp, immigration will check the visa control number in its computer system and issue a new stamp for you.

You must attach the official Name Change Certificate (change of first name or surname), translated into English and legalised (Apostille), to prove that you are the same person. Only then will immigration change the name in the visa database.

It is very different. If your old passport was lost, you must file a report at a police station and submit the original police report together with an identity confirmation letter from your embassy, so that immigration can search your records in the system and reissue your previous stamps. This process is more complex than usual.

If you still live at the same address, you do not need to file a new TM.30. During the transfer process, the officer will scan the barcode to link your existing address to your new passport number in the system automatically.

No. Once your visa has expired, that visa status has ended. You must go through the legal process of paying the overstay fine and may need to leave the country to obtain a new visa. This is not a simple stamp transfer.

Yes, the same applies. Every foreign child holding a long-term visa must have their visa stamp transferred to their current passport when it is renewed, to avoid problems when travelling in and out of the country or completing 90-Day Reporting.

No. This process is not available online, because immigration officers must physically inspect both original passports, and the new passport must be stamped in ink and signed in person by the registrar.

Yes, directly. When your 90-Day Report is due, if your current passport does not yet have the transferred visa stamp, neither the computer system nor the immigration officer can approve your report, because the entry permission details in your new passport are incomplete.

It does not affect ownership of your property. However, once your visa has been transferred to the new passport, if you sell the car or carry out any transaction at the Department of Land Transport in the future, you must also attach a copy of the data page of your old passport, or update your details with the Department of Land Transport.

If your documents are complete and submitted through ETHAIVISA’s service quota, the process is generally completed within 1 to 2 working days (depending on the workload of the local immigration office), so you get your passport back quickly.

Your passport is handled and transported directly by a Liaison & Logistics Officer (external document delivery and coordination officer) of Billfett Co., Ltd. It is never sent by ordinary post, and a strict document hand-over tracking system is in place, so you can be confident of the highest safety standards.

Because transferring a passport involves embassy requirements that differ by nationality, as well as keeping the immigration data system consistent. An incomplete document set or an incorrectly completed form can disrupt your main visa status and cost you several working days. The ETHAIVISA team checks your document structure, prepares the correct application forms and handles the queuing and coordination for you with care, reducing errors so that your residence status and right to work in Thailand continue smoothly and with the highest level of security.
